Westcoast Kitchen Garden

Earlier in the year, this area functioned as a compacted paddock at the edge of an eroding hillside, offering little structure for long-term planting.

The garden was reshaped through terracing and soil rebuilding, creating a series of protected growing areas suited to the site’s exposure and slope. Drought-tolerant, Mediterranean-inspired edibles anchor the design, with fruit, nut, and berry plantings framing a central kitchen garden intended for daily use and regular harvesting.

Rather than relying on constant inputs, the system was designed to establish gradually. As soil health improves and perennial plantings settle in, productivity will increase year by year, remaining well adapted to West Coast conditions.

This kitchen garden forms an integral part of a larger regenerative landscape, showing how practical food production can be woven into broader ecological systems with care, restraint, and patience.
