Forest Garden Patio

This garden was shaped by shade, slope, and water, conditions that guided the design rather than limiting it. Access to the site was limited, requiring the work to be carried out carefully and in stages, with close attention to existing terrain and vegetation.

Layered plantings of shade-tolerant edible and medicinal species create a lush understory that feels settled and resilient. Seasonal water moves through the site as a small creek and rain garden, supporting soil health while slowing and absorbing runoff. Stone steps and a modest bridge create clear circulation, allowing the garden to be experienced gradually rather than all at once.

Integrated alongside the planting is a simple patio that extends the living space outdoors. Designed to support both daily use and meaningful gatherings, the garden balances function with atmosphere, offering nourishment, habitat, and a sense of calm within a forested setting. It demonstrates how challenging conditions can become generous landscapes when design works with existing rhythms and long-term care.
